A NEW Gallery Saratoga

Gallery Saratoga opened its doors in 1984 at a little shoppe in what is now called the El Paseo Shopping Center. A few years later we moved into the Village of Saratoga (AKA Downtown Saratoga) to take advantage of the beautiful small town street. We’re still in the Village and part of the community 30 years later.

Just like many other businesses, we’ve had a tough time through the “Great Recession.” But, we were able to keep our doors open and support our artists and patrons in our community. The world, including the art community, has changed a lot over the last 5 years. There are fewer people shopping and strolling in the Village. Art is now often purchased online without direct contact with the artist.

At Gallery Saratoga, we want to keep that connection between artist and patron available, but we also realize that it is time for us to leave our founding mindset and embrace new strategies for connecting artists and patrons. Our new mission is to produce new artworks, improve our facilities, create community outreach through classes, events, and exhibits and recapture the excitement of creating by bringing new artist talents into the gallery.

We know that this means we’ll need to spend a little money to make these improvements. So, we’ve started a Kickstarter campaign (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1863963761/keep-art-and-artists-in-silicon-valley) to raise the funds to make the magic happen. We’re not asking anyone to donate money and receive nothing. Instead, we are asking the community to challenge our artists to create new works by commissioning them on a deadline. All of the artists participating in the Kickstarter campaign are creating the works and giving a large percentage back to the gallery. They are doing this because they love to create art and they want to see the gallery transition to the 21st Century.

Things that we have already started to implement:

• Hosting classes and free demonstrations at the gallery by our artists. Classes include watercolor, photography and painting with an iPad.

• Community exhibits and competitions for artists that are not currently part of the gallery.

• Updated and new e-newsletter, Facebook, Pinterest, blog and website (www.gallerysaratoga.com).

• Joining the Chamber of Commerce and participating in more community events.

And we hope to get an online shop open soon.

Visit Gallery Saratoga. We always have a friendly artist ready to show you around and answer your questions. Gallery Saratoga is open Wednesday-Sunday, 11AM-6PM, 14435A Big Basin Way, Saratoga, CA

The Art Market Reaches Record Sales!

According to Blomberg, the art market is HOT right now with buyers from all over the world looking to purchase art. Sales topped $66 Billion worldwide in sales!

“Global art sales approached their pre-crisis high last year, led by record prices for postwar artists and a jump in U.S. auctions. Sales of art and antiques increased 8 percent from a year earlier to 47.4 billion euros ($65.9 billion), according to a report compiled by Arts Economics and published today by the European Fine Art Foundation.”

And “online sales, a small but rapidly growing segment of the market, generated more than 2.5 billion euros in 2013, the report showed.

‘It is estimated that the online art market, including online sales by auction houses, dealers and online-only companies, could grow at a rate of at least 25 percent per annum, meaning that they could exceed 10 billion euros by 2020,’ the report found.” http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-03-12/global-art-market-surged-to-66-billion-in-2013-report.html

This is exciting news for both patrons and artists alike!

Our gallery, Gallery Saratoga, located in the Village of Saratoga, California shares original art created by locals at very affordable prices. If you come to the gallery, you will always be greeted by one of the artists exhibiting their work, because our gallery is owned by the artists. Sometimes you will see artists working on their artwork. Since all of the artists are local, you can also commission one to create customs works for you.

Here’s a gallery of some of the work created by our artists.

Oil Painting Demonstration by Julia Munger Seelos

Alla Prima Technique for Plein Air Painting
June 22nd, Gallery Saratoga 1PM-3PM

Painting in the outdoors, known as “plein air”, allows the artist to experience the beauty of a place while trying to capture in paint the shapes, colors and textures that make it special. Painting with oils can be both rewarding and frustrating. A few basic principles coupled with the correct materials arms the novice with the tools to grow in their journey to become a better painter.

Julia will show how she packs to go out into the field, sets up, and does a plein air painting in oil. She’ll cover equipment and tools to make the plein air experience easier.  The demonstration will cover the materials and their use, basics of composition and color theory.  Julia will demonstrate, explaining her methods as she works from a photograph indoors.  You’ll learn about subject selection and composition, how to simplify for a dramatic and do-able painting.  You’ll learn how to apply paint thin to thick, dark to light to capture the quickly changing light.

More than two dozen of Julia’s paintings are featured in the gallery during June.
